THE CFO’S ROLE IN ETHICAL AI
On September 27th, the federal government unveiled a voluntary code of conduct for the use of advanced generative artificial intelligence systems in Canada. The two-page code of conduct commits signatories to supporting the development of a “robust, responsible AI ecosystem in Canada”.
The code will complement legislation making its way through Parliament (as Bill C-27) and promote the safe development of AI systems. Generative AI includes products like ChatGPT and other systems that can create things like text, images, music, or video.
Among the dozen companies and groups that have agreed to sign the voluntary code of conduct are BlackBerry, OpenText, TELUS and the Canadian Council of Innovators, which represents more than 100 start-up companies across Canada. Conversely, the CEO of Shopify was critical of the government’s initiative describing it as “another case of EFRAID.”.
Governments around the world are speeding to develop AI policies that balance innovation and consumer protection, even as that technology is rapidly evolving.
Not without its controversy, the code presents an ethical dilemma for organizations and its senior leaders – including the CFO. Is a voluntary code of conduct meaningful and effective to address a commitment to transparency and avoiding bias in the use of advanced generative AI? Is adopting a voluntary code a good prelude to what could eventually be legislated?

Rose is also a Toronto Metropolitan University alumna, and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Law and Business.
Chris MacDonald, PhD, teaches ethics and critical thinking at the Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM), at Toronto Metropolitan University. A philosopher by training, he is Interim Director of TRSM’s MBA Program, and Director of the Ted Rogers Leadership Centre. MacDonald is an award-winning instructor, and the author of two textbooks. MacDonald is also co-author of the Concise Encyclopedia of Business Ethics and founding co-editor of the Business Ethics Journal Review, both of which are free resources available to students, scholars, and professionals.
Jasmine Tsang is the Managing Partner, Ethics for Deloitte Canada. In this role, Jasmine oversees the firm’s ethics program, provides insights on ethics, and sets the agenda for key programs to promote, sustain and build an ethical culture at Deloitte. Prior to this, she was the Deputy Global Chief Ethics Officer for Deloitte working with a network of Ethics Officers from around the globe to shape and influence the ethics agenda for Deloitte.
Jasmine has over 20 years of experience at Deloitte in Canada and internationally across a wide range of areas including: ethics and conduct, enterprise risk management, financial risk management and audit. She is passionate about coaching and developing the next generation of leaders and actively participates in programs to support diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Jasmine is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant. She completed her Bachelor of Commerce from the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary and a Master of Professional Accounting from the University of Saskatchewan.
