Ethics in Cryptocurrency

Speaker: Nélia Teixeira

Nélia Teixeira is a lawyer, designer, and professor at George Brown College, where she teaches Laws and Regulations in the Blockchain Development Program, Canada’s first college certificate program in blockchain technology.

Through her consultancy, Legal by Design, Nélia advises clients in the emerging technology space and helps them navigate the changing regulatory landscape, as well as design solutions to business problems. Nélia holds a J.D. from the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law, a B.A. from York University in International Studies, and is currently a M.Design Candidate in Strategic Foresight and Innovation at OCAD University.

Nélia has a deep interest in systems thinking and understanding how change happens. She is a proponent of ethical design and interdisciplinary research, and uses this approach to understand opportunities and challenges from a systemic perspective.

This breakfast seminar will cover the following topics:

 

    Blockchain basics including what is a blockchain and what is crypto currency?
    Regulatory concerns in the Canadian context including money laundering, securities fraud, criminality (Quadriga), data storage and security, and the technical limitations of blockchains and cryptocurrency
    Ethical Design, that is, the broader implications of how blockchains might be used in the future, and how regulators and technologists may respond to ethical concerns. Included in this discussion will be a case study (Facebook’s Libra Coin) and International ethical standards
